DA seeks to build 159 apartments and 10 townhouses for Yowani Country Club

POSTED ON June 22, 2023 @ 1:58 pm

Lyneham in Canberra’s north could have an extra 5,000 residents in the coming years, following a new development application from the Yowani Country Club.

The club has submitted plans for the first part of its major redevelopment at its 8.6-hectare site near the entrance to the city.

Last year, Yowani released a master plan for the site, including plans for 1,000 medium and high-density dwellings.

The plan would be a northward extension of the rapid residential development happening along Northbourne Avenue.

According to the plan, the golf course would stay as part of the wider development, but the club does intend to build a new clubhouse as its residential precinct expands.

The drawing shows the development of apartments located north of Swinden St and west of Northbourne Avenue.
The development application seeks to build 159 apartments, as well as townhouses, at the site.()

The Yowani development application proposes adding two 10-storey buildings to the site, which would hold 159 apartments, as well as 10 townhouses adjacent to the golf course.

Community consultation was conducted privately by the developers and planning consultants for the project, though the engagement was minimal, perhaps because the site is surrounded mostly by sporting facilities.

While detailed plans for the first stage of the building have been submitted, some local residents said they would like to see detail for the whole site, including any provision for green space.

“We would like to see a well-consulted master plan for the whole area to look at the opportunities they offer, rather than piece-meal developments,” Jochen Zeil of the North Canberra Community Council said.
