Golf Writer Terry Smith Passes

POSTED ON September 2, 2018 @ 8:19 am
Author of many golf books and one the founding members of the Australian golf Writers Association, Terry Smith, sadly passed away Wednesday at the age of 81.

Terry had been suffering from dementia and was most recently in an aged care hospital at Belrose in northern Sydney.

Among his many books were The Complete Book of Australian Golf, The Champions and the Courses They Played, Australian Golf – The First 100 Years. He wrote on golf for The Sun newspaper and The Sun-Herald and was a regular contributor in the early years of Golf Australia magazine.

Terry also covered the Open Championships of the US, Britain, Canada, France, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Switzerland. Smith was a happy hacker whose swing was described by Ken Nagle as “excellent for killing snakes”.

Terry’s son Roger said: “He always had an amazing passion for golf and would want everyone in the community to know.”

“He was a founding member (AGMA) with his great friends Tom Ramsey and Don Lawrence and will miss you all.”

Terry is survived by his wife Sybilla, and two sons.
