Have Your Say – Sydney’s Cammeray GC Up For Potential “Repurposing”

POSTED ON December 19, 2024 @ 2:26 pm

North Sydney Council has been developing an Open Space and Recreation Strategy as part of its ten-year plan for 2025-2035.

In preparing the strategy, the Council engaged Ross Planning to conduct the Open Space and Recreation Needs Study. Cammeray Golf Course is referenced 52 times, primarily to propose the potential repurposing of the Golf Course for multi-sport use.

The report includes several key findings, such as:

  • “The predominant current feature of the site is the Cammeray Golf Club. The specialised nature of this facility greatly minimises public access and use of Cammeray Park.” – page 26
  • “The real opportunity for increased sporting and recreation activities at the site is the vast area currently utilised by the golf course (approximately 8.2ha).” – page 26
  • “In addition to the highly restrictive nature of the use of such a specialised sporting area, past golf usage numbers outlined in the Golf Market Assessment Report 2016 have indicated the area is not highly used for this purpose. By undertaking a detailed review of the use of this valuable community land, greatly increased sport and recreation opportunities could be offered.” – page 26
  • “No new facilities or improvements proposed but investigate alternative uses of golf course” – Given a HIGH priority – page 35
  • “At an LGA level, there is a significant deficiency in land for formal sports. An identified issue for the Cammeray catchment is the large amount of open space land locked up from the community in its current form as the Cammeray Golf Course.” – page 45
  • “Cammeray Golf Course • opportunity to master plan and re-develop the site for greater community use based on the demand for sport and recreation.” – page 45
  • “Dealing with our open space deficit – Better use of the Cammeray Golf Course by other sports/activities and the community could be achieved. A detailed master plan of the site (once the exact available footprint is finalised) should be undertaken, including the ongoing feasibility of any proposed elements (including golf).” – page 88
